On August 29, 2021, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria spoke at a campaign rally in Meru County, urging residents of the Mt Kenya region to diversify their hopes beyond Deputy President William Ruto.
“Don’t be obsessed with William Ruto too much. He is not the traditional mwarubaini that cures all diseases,” Kuria said, cautioning against overreliance on the DP.
The statement comes as Kuria faces off against DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the Kiagu Ward by-election. In recent days, Kuria has been at the center of controversy, with some accusing him of being a mole in the Tangatanga camp.
DP Ruto loyalists have been critical of Kuria, with Jubilee Party vice-chairman David Murathe claiming that the MP regularly talks to President Uhuru Kenyatta at night. Kuria has denied the allegations, insisting that he is a true soldier in the DP’s camp.
Addressing his supporters in Murang’a, Kuria expressed frustration with UDA members who have been attacking him. He pointed out that he had helped Ruto’s party win the Kiambaa parliamentary by-election, but was now being rebuked.
“I saved UDA in Kiambaa. If I did now withdraw my candidate, UDA would have lost to Jubilee,” Kuria said.
He also dismissed calls for his Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) party to fold in favor of UDA, stating that other options were available if a pre-coalition deal was not possible.
