This archive report was first published on 28 August 2021.

With a passion for travel and exploration, Haadi Abdulkadir has been on an incredible journey, visiting 18 African countries and numerous international destinations in just over three years. His daily budget of Ksh 1,000 is a testament to his resourcefulness and determination.

Abdulkadir's travels have taken him to Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi, Senegal, Gambia, Djibouti, and Eritrea in Africa, as well as Iran, Iraq (Kurdistan Region), India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Brazil, Cuba, and Peru outside the continent.

Abdulkadir's secret to affordable travel lies in his ability to find the best bargains on accommodation and eat at local restaurants, which are often quite affordable. He also uses online platforms like Couchsurfing to connect with locals who can host him, and stays in hostels for around $4 to $6 a night.

Despite the challenges he faces during travel, Abdulkadir remains optimistic and enthusiastic about his adventures. However, he has encountered hostile neighbours in some of the countries he has visited, including Tanzania, where he has been harassed and profiled by authorities on multiple occasions.

Abdulkadir's experiences have taught him that it can be difficult to travel in Africa as an African, and he has come to realize that some of his friends from Ghana and Nigeria also face similar problems.

Even though he is Somali-Kenyan, Abdulkadir admits that there's no better place than home in Kenya, and he encourages readers to follow his travel adventures on Instagram (@haaditravels) and Facebook (Haaditravel).
