On August 28, 2021, the County Government of Kilifi marked a significant milestone in the healthcare sector with the commissioning of a new modern maternity, paediatric, and theatre blocks at Mariakani Sub-County Hospital.

The Sh200-million project, which includes a 64-bed paediatric ward and a 45-bed maternity ward, aims to boost maternal and healthcare delivery in the region.

During the opening ceremony, Governor Amason Kingi emphasized the County Government's commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and equipping facilities with modern machines to handle maternal and paediatric complications.

"This is a big achievement for our health sector in this county. These modern facilities will bring relief to our people. It is our determination to take healthcare closer to the people," Governor Kingi said.

As part of the upgrade, the hospital will also serve as an internship centre, with additional personnel assigned to the facility to cater to the needs of over 50,000 residents within its catchment area.

The County Government has also assigned a general surgeon, an orthopaedic and spinal surgeon, a paediatrician, a physician, and two obstetric/gynaecologists to the hospital to offer specialized treatment.

Plans are underway to construct an emergency and trauma centre, complete with a theatre, to deal with emergencies along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
