On August 28, 2021, seven Comorans who had been rescued from the Indian Ocean after a 22-day ordeal finally returned home to the Comoro Islands.
The survivors, who had been admitted to Malindi Sub-County Hospital since August 10, 2021, were accompanied by Assistant Honorary Consul of Comoros Farahane Mohamed, who expressed gratitude to Malindi Hospital and all those who supported the survivors during their stay.
"We would like to thank Malindi Hospital and all those who supported my citizens from the day they were rescued, the support and donations they received at the hospital and those who gave them counselling," Mr. Mohamed said.
The group, which included Nassiru Tawidu, Mohammed Ahmed, Mahmud Hassan, Mohammed Saidwahi, Samin Mohammed, Samir Mahmud, and Haruna Huseni, had set sail from Nzuani Island to Mayotte Island when their vessel broke down, leaving them helpless.
According to Nassiru Tawidu, one of the survivors, the group had planned for a two-day journey but ended up drifting for 22 days, during which they lost seven of their group members, including a pregnant woman, her husband, and two children.
"My being alive was by God's grace," Mr. Tawidu said, recalling their horrific experience.
