On August 27, 2021, the national volleyball playoffs kicked off in Mombasa, with defending champions Prisons Kenya facing a tough test against Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Prisons Kenya, led by coach Josp Barasa, were subjected to unfamiliar pressure as they labored to beat DCI 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-13, 15-10) in a five-set thriller at Makande Indoor Gymnasium.
DCI, coached by Daniel Bor, played a strong game, with Veronica Adhiambo leading the team in her debut at the playoffs. The team coordinated well, with superb serves and reception, to win the first set 25-21.
However, Prisons Kenya, with experienced players like Brackcides Agala, Yvonne Wavinya, Joy Luseneka, and Judith Tarus, fought back to win the second set 25-22.
DCI bounced back to win the third set 25-21, but Prisons Kenya drew level after claiming the fourth set 25-13, sending the match into a tiebreaker.
The fifth set was intense, with both teams tied at 5-5 and 7-7 before Prisons Kenya emerged victorious, winning 15-10 and enhancing their chances of retaining the trophy.
Coach Daniel Bor expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, saying, 'We gave our best, but it was just a bad day in office.'
Coach Josp Barasa was also pleased with the win, stating, 'It was a tough match, but I'm happy we won.'
