Published on August 27, 2021, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced plans to upgrade Kisumu International Airport with a KSh157 million facelift in preparation for the 9th edition of the Africities Summit scheduled to take place in April 2022.

The upgrade will involve constructing a 1,000 square meter parking space, renovating the passenger terminal, and building a parking garage, office space, and taxiway.

The expansion project aims to increase the airport's annual passenger capacity from the current 500,000 to one million.

The funding was secured from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure through a requisition by the County Government of Kisumu.

According to KAA's marketing manager Jimmy Kibati, several international airlines have expressed interest in operating direct international flights to Kisumu International Airport, including Qatar Airways and Ethiopian Airlines.
