On August 27, 2021, Meru prison warder Edwin Omuse made headlines after he vanished with a loaded G-3 gun, sparking a manhunt by police.

According to reports, Omuse had amassed Ksh.900,000 from a bank loan, but his girlfriend had extorted the cash from him.

Omuse, who was stationed at Kangeta GK Prisons, picked up a G-3 rifle packed with twenty rounds of live ammunition before leaving to look for his girlfriend in Thika town.

He was heard saying that he was leading the way to Thika to kill his kleptomaniac girlfriend who had defrauded him of the Ksh.900,000.

However, detectives from the Special Service Unit and Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau swung into action and tracked down Omuse's girlfriend, who was a fourth-year student at Mt. Kenya University's main campus in Thika.

The detectives quickly moved the girlfriend to safety and set up an ambush for Omuse, who arrived at her house at around 5 pm.

Omuse used a spare key to gain entry into the house and assembled his firearm, but the detectives arrested him without firing a single shot.

They also recovered the firearm loaded with 20 rounds of 7.62 mm caliber, which had been hidden beneath a couch.
