On Wednesday evening, a lorry heading towards Nairobi from Nakuru collided head-on with a 14-seater matatu at Greenstead area in Mbaruk, resulting in a tragic accident.
According to Nakuru East Sub-county Police Commander Elena Kabukuru, the accident occurred at 6:45 pm and claimed the lives of six people, including five passengers and the matatu driver.
However, a twist emerged when first responders initially identified one of the three survivors as the lorry driver, only to later discover that he was actually a passenger.
Police have dispatched officers to various hospitals in the area to locate the lorry driver, who is believed to have survived with injuries.
Nakuru County Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri expressed regret over the incident, stating that the matatu driver's efforts to avoid the collision were futile.
The accident has sparked concerns among residents, who have been protesting over increasing road accidents in the area, blaming speeding and freewheeling vehicles on the gentle slope.
Residents are now calling for speed bumps to be erected along the stretch to prevent future accidents.
