This archive report was first published on 26 August 2021.

Published on August 26, 2021, Safaricom introduced changes to its Home Fibre service, including revised terms and conditions, double speeds, and new Fair Usage limits.

However, the introduction of these changes coincided with the Kenyan government's excise duty changes in July 2021, leading to a significant increase in Home Fibre prices.

As a result, customers now need to pay both the bouquet price and a KES 3,000 connection fee to get a new Home Fibre connection. For example, the 20Mbps package costs KES 4,100 plus KES 3,000, totaling KES 7,100 for the first month.

According to Safaricom's terms and conditions, the connection fee is redeemable, but only if customers pay for the service consecutively for the first 6 months after signing up.

Redeeming the Home Fibre Connection Fee

  • When signing up for Home Fibre, customers pay the connection fee of KES 3,000.
  • They can choose a package that suits their needs.
  • To redeem the connection fee, customers must renew their Home Fibre package for 6 consecutive months.
  • After the 3rd consecutive renewal, KES 1,500 is loaded back to the customer's account.
  • After the 6th consecutive renewal, the remaining KES 1,500 is loaded back to the account.
  • When these amounts are loaded back, customers pay less for the coming month as the redeemed amount counts as overpayment.

It's essential to note that customers must renew their subscription for the first 6 months for this to work. If they fail to renew a month, they won't get to redeem their connection fee.
