On July 3, 2019, the trial of former Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) moderator David Gathanju kicked off in a Kiambu Court over alleged theft of 40 million shillings.
Gathanju and two other church employees, James Muiruri Njane and Peter Kamuthi, are accused of irregularly transferring millions from the church account to their personal accounts without approval.
The case dates back to 2016 and 2017, when the three allegedly transferred millions from the church account to their personal accounts on various dates.
The church's lawyer, Jane Mwihaki, told the court that Gathanju and his co-accused transferred millions of church funds from its account to another without approval.
Reverend Gathanju, who served as PCEA moderator between 2009-2015, is accused of defrauding the church at the Church's head office in Nairobi's south C estate between January 2016 and June 2017.
