Published on August 25, 2021, a week after 33 travellers were brutally killed in Rubuka, Jos, in Nigeria's Plateau state, another wave of bloodshed has struck the region.

On Tuesday, a group of gunmen, allegedly on a revenge mission over the August 14 killings, attacked Yelwa-zangam, a community located behind the University of Jos in Jos North Local Government, north central Nigeria.

The attackers destroyed the access bridge leading to the community before carrying out the raid at around 9pm, leaving a trail of destruction and burning houses in their wake.

Security operatives have since gained access to the village, and rescue operations are underway.

The Plateau State Police Command has yet to provide details of the incident, but the attack comes on the heels of a military allegation of a plot to cause unrest in Jos.

The reprisals that followed the killing of the 33 travellers led to the closure of the University of Jos, which has reportedly lost several students to the ongoing crisis.

Jos has been plagued by ethno-religious and political crisis for decades, with over 13,500 people killed in communal violence since 1984.

The heavy presence of military and police forces has maintained a fragile calm in the city, but the latest attack raises concerns about the region's stability.
