On August 25, 2021, protests broke out in Kahawa West, Kiambu County, after the Nairobi Metropolitan Services allegedly demolished traders' stalls in the wee hours without giving a prior eviction notice.
Residents, irate over the sudden action, lit bonfires and barricaded the 32-kilometre Eastern Bypass, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Tragically, a middle-aged tuk-tuk driver was shot dead by police as they attempted to repel the protesters.
By 11 am, relative calm had resumed, but the incident has left the community reeling.
