On August 25, 2021, Murang'a County Assembly was closed due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, with several staff members testing positive for the virus.
The closure came just two weeks after the county government's offices were shut down due to increased coronavirus infections.
As a precautionary measure, the county administration has directed all staff to get vaccinated against Covid-19, with the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine taking place at the county headquarters.
Earlier, Murang'a County Executive Member for Health, Water and Sanitation, Joseph Mbai, had raised concerns over the rising number of Covid-19 cases, prompting the county administration to impose a partial lockdown on two locations, Mukurwe and Njahiini, within Gatanga Sub County.
The locations were closed after more than 50 cases were reported within two weeks, with Mbai urging residents to adhere to Covid-19 protocols to contain the situation.
"My appeal to locals is to adhere to given protocols to contain the situation with the positivity rate in the region standing at more than 30 per cent," Mbai urged.
