On the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has called for multi-stakeholder and cross-sectoral partnerships to drive investments and innovations in the health sector. Speaking at the 17th health sector intergovernmental consultative forum, the CS highlighted the importance of innovative health financing, which has proven successful globally.
According to the CS, the pandemic has taught Kenya the value of prioritizing investments and articulating what matters most. He noted that the unpredictable nature of the disease has made it critical to accelerate the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to cushion citizens from financial distress due to medical conditions.
The national government has prioritized UHC with a focus on output financing to ensure sustainable financing. The CS emphasized the need for an explicit essential benefits package for UHC Scheme beneficiaries to ensure access to essential services needed for health and well-being.
Bringing both levels of government together to deliberate and find solutions to critical issues affecting the health sector will ensure all Kenyans access the highest standard of health as envisaged in the Constitution, the CS said.
