On Tuesday, a shootout between police officers and heavily armed bandits in Dabadarer junction, Wajir county, left two officers dead.
According to a police report, the incident occurred during a routine patrol by police officers of the Kenya Police Service (KPS) and the National Police Reserve (NPR) in the area.
The bandits were challenged to surrender, but they defied the order, leading to the shootout, which left them gravely injured. Fortunately, none of the police officers were injured during the incident, although they sustained minor bruises from the thorny bushes.
One of the deceased officers has been identified as PC Yerrow Noor from Dadaab Division, while the other remains unidentified. Their bodies are being held at the Dadajabula police post, awaiting identification from relatives and a postmortem.
During the shootout, the police officers recovered several items, including phones, four AK-47 rifles, firearms, and ammunition, as well as 14 empty magazines of AK-47 rifles, three pouches, two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) smoke jackets, and a D-light solar panel.
The case has been handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further investigation.
