On August 24, 2021, the Busia County Government organized a free eye screening and treatment camp for residents of Matayos Sub County, who were suffering from eye problems.
According to Harriet Kavere, the County Eye Coordinator, patients were screened and surgeries performed at Muyafwa Dispensary in Matayos South Ward. The most common problems identified were allergic conjunctivitis and cataract.
"After screening, we ascertained that some patients required eye glasses which were given free of charge while those with cataracts had surgery performed on them at no cost. Cataract surgery is very expensive especially in advanced hospitals," said Kavere, a cataract surgeon.
The County Government aims to ensure eye care services are taken closer to the locals, with plans to devolve eye care services to all Sub County hospitals by opening satellite eye clinics.
"Apart from the eye care services being provided at the BCRH we also have satellite eye clinics at Kocholia and Khunyangu Sub County hospitals that are fully equipped to offer minor and major surgeries," Kavere added.
Patients interviewed appreciated the efforts of the County Government to provide eye care services, with one beneficiary expressing hope that they would be able to see clearly and undertake normal duties after the surgery.
