On August 24, 2021, a tragic incident shook the Njoro community when Constable Bernard Sivo, 28, allegedly murdered his 29-year-old girlfriend Mary Nyambura before taking his own life at Njoro Sub-County hospital.
According to eyewitnesses and police investigation, Sivo first attacked Nyambura at her Wines and Spirit shop in Njoro, forcing her to undress and subjecting her to a brutal beating that left her with a broken leg.
Believing Nyambura was cheating on him, Sivo's anger escalated, and he planned his attack after learning she had been admitted to the hospital.
On the fateful night, Sivo excused himself from duty, claiming he was making a phone call, and headed to the hospital, where he rained bullets on Nyambura while she was on her bed, forcing medics and a security guard to flee for their lives.
After the attack, Sivo returned to the police station, ordering his colleagues to stay indoors.
His wife, Joyce Ndunge, reported that Sivo came home shouting that he had killed a woman who was ruining his marriage, and he went on to shoot in the air while holding their daughter.
When Ndunge tried to intervene, Sivo shot at her, thinking she was another officer, but later let her approach him, and she pleaded with him not to harm himself.
As the situation unfolded, Sivo called out his relatives and in-laws, confessed to his crime, and asked his daughter to go inside, but ultimately took his own life after being cornered by fellow police officers.
