On August 22, 2021, a tragic incident unfolded at the Njoro Sub-County Hospital in Nakuru County, where a police officer, Bernard Kivo, shot and killed his 29-year-old girlfriend, Mary Nyambura, who was receiving treatment for a fractured right leg.
According to eyewitnesses, the officer, who was based at the Njoro Police Station, visited Ms Nyambura at the hospital while armed and shot her several times, resulting in her instant death.
After killing his girlfriend, the officer left the hospital and returned to the police station, where he started shooting aimlessly, prompting his colleagues to scatter.
During the attempts to disarm him, the officer turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the chin. The bullet exited on the upper forehead, and he died instantly, as reported by his colleagues at the Njoro Police Station.
The officer's AK-47 rifle, S/NO. 4912292, was recovered from the scene with 11 rounds of ammunition.
The two bodies were taken to the Egerton University mortuary to await post-mortem.
