On August 22, 2021, a tragic incident unfolded at the Njoro Sub-County Hospital in Nakuru County, Kenya.
A police officer, Bernard Kivo, who was based at the Njoro Police Station, visited his girlfriend, Mary Nyambura, 29, while she was receiving treatment for a fractured right leg.
Armed and allegedly fueled by anger, Kivo shot Nyambura several times, resulting in her instant death.
According to eyewitnesses, Kivo had been on duty at the police station but told his colleagues he was going to make a call outside, only to head to the hospital where he committed the heinous crime.
After killing Nyambura, Kivo returned to the police station, where he began shooting aimlessly, prompting his colleagues to scatter.
During the attempts to disarm him, Kivo turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the chin. The bullet exited on the upper forehead, resulting in his instant death.
The AK-47 rifle, S/NO. 4912292, was recovered from the scene with 11 rounds of ammunition.
Reached for comment, Njoro OCPD Jonathan Kisaka stated he was in a meeting and had yet to receive the report.
Nyambura's grief-stricken relatives were seen outside the police station the following morning.
The two bodies were taken to the Egerton University mortuary to await post-mortem.
