As of August 23, 2021, new rules and regulations aimed at keeping Nairobi clean and hygienic have been signed into law.

The Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Bill, 2021, prohibits various public nuisances, including urinating in undesignated spaces, spitting on the streets, sleeping in kitchens or food stores, and riding motorcycles or driving on footpaths.

Acting Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu emphasized the importance of a clean and hygienic environment, stating, “Nairobi is the face of Kenya. We all need a clean and hygienic environment to live and work in.”

Residents found flouting the new law will be liable to a fine of up to Ksh500,000 and imprisonment for six to 12 months, depending on the offense committed.

County officials have been instructed to take the matter seriously and work round the clock to achieve a healthy environment.

County executive member for Environment, Energy, Water and Sanitation Larry Wambua thanked Riruta MCA Kariuki Kiriba for coming up with the bill and ensuring its successful passage.
