On March 26, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at a zebra crossing near Lang'ata Barracks gate in Nairobi, where a primary school pupil lost their life.

According to reports, Rodgers Ochomo, a motorist, failed to stop at the designated crossing zone despite being signaled by a Kenya Wildlife Service driver, Benson Mugambi. This reckless act resulted in the death of a 7-year-old pupil and grievous bodily harm to another.

On August 22, 2021, Rodgers Ochomo was sentenced by Senior Principal Magistrate Philip Mutua to pay a fine of Sh. 50,000 for killing the pupil and an additional Sh. 20,000 for causing grievous bodily harm to the other pupil.

However, the prosecutor has expressed dissatisfaction with the lenient sentence, stating that an appeal will be made.
