On August 21, 2021, Heristone Wanyonyi achieved a remarkable feat by clinching Kenya's first-ever gold medal in the 10,000m walk at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.

Wanyonyi's victory marked a significant milestone for Kenya, as he became the first Kenyan to win a gold medal in the event and the first to win a walk medal at any world championship.

With a new personal best time of 42 minutes and 10.84 seconds, Wanyonyi outpaced India's Amit, who took silver, and Spain's Paul McGrath, who secured bronze with a new personal best time of 42 minutes and 26.11 seconds.

Wanyonyi's journey to the top was not without its challenges. He started the race at the back of the pack, but he remained patient and waited for the right moment to strike. With three laps left, he attempted to overtake Amit, but he later re-took the lead with two laps remaining.

At the bell, Wanyonyi made his move and weaved past Amit. He then increased the gap and confidently crossed the finish line to claim Kenya's first-ever walking gold medal.

Wanyonyi's achievement is a testament to his dedication and perseverance. He has shown that Kenya can produce world-class athletes in the sport of race walking, and his victory serves as a motivation for others to take up the sport.
