Since January, Karuru Vocational Training Centre in Mugoiri ward has undergone significant transformations, courtesy of several organizations.
The centre, which initially had 49 trainees, has now grown to over 150, thanks to the renovations and new equipment.

The centre's principal, Mr. Ben Wasike, attributed the growth in trainees to the availability of water, thanks to a 100,000-litre water tank sponsored by Can-Do-Kids, an American-based charity organization.
"The construction of the tank and the academic block, which kicked off in January this year, lasted for almost two months. Now the institution has plenty of water," Wasike told KNA.
The centre has also benefited from the construction of a modern ablution block, courtesy of the county government in partnership with the World Bank.
"The County government in partnership with the World Bank also renovated our workshops and constructed modern washrooms for our trainees. Initially the institution relied on pit latrines but now we have a modern ablution block," Wasike noted.
The centre has also started offering a course in beauty and cosmetology, which has attracted a big number of local youth.
"Technical courses are of high demand in the community. Those in the construction industry want plumbers, electricians, masons among other personnel. Vocational training centres are playing a key role in producing technicians," explained Wasike.
