Kenyan athletes Purity Chepkirui and Winnie Jemutai have made a strong impression at the World Under-20 Championships, storming into the 1500m final after qualifying from the heats on Friday morning.
While Chepkirui dominated her heat, winning in a faster time of 4:22.10, Jemutai had a tougher time, finishing second in her heat with a time of 4:26.27.
Speaking after the race, Jemutai expressed her relief at qualifying for the final, saying, 'I am pleased to have qualified because that was the only target today. I felt okay and my body feels in great shape. Now the focus is on the final to ensure we try and win something for Kenya.'
On the other hand, Chepkirui was more confident in her heat, winning ahead of Ethiopian Hiwot Mehari who timed 4:22.37. Chepkirui powered home with a good last kick, while Mehari tried to catch up but ultimately fell short.
When asked about her performance, Chepkirui said, 'The pace was good enough and I was comfortable. I am even more happier that both of us (Kenyans) have qualified for the final. Now we just need to plan well, and execute to get a medal.'
