On August 19, 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced plans to evacuate Kenyans stranded in Afghanistan.

Working closely with the Kenya High Commission in Islamabad, Pakistan, the ministry aimed to gather information on any Kenyans who needed evacuation.

Foreign Affairs CS Raychelle Omamo stated that the ministry had reached out to allies to gather information on stranded Kenyans and potential evacuation prospects.

Omamo revealed that 52 Kenyans had been successfully evacuated from Afghanistan, with 12 being flown to Birmingham in the UK and another group of 40 to Kazakhstan on August 18, 2021.

The evacuation was facilitated by the Kenyan Embassy in Beijing, China.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Kenyans, despite the lack of a diplomatic presence in Afghanistan.

Omamo assured that Kenyan missions in the region would continue to reach out to Kenyans employed in the security sector and others engaged by private companies who were yet to be evacuated.
