On August 19, 2021, Nyeri town county police commander Adiel Nyange revealed that 21 men in Nyeri County had died by suicide since June, sparking alarm among police.
The alarming trend has prompted the police to roll out an exercise to engage men in the county and gather data on what is ailing them.
According to Nyange, the county reported thirty suicide cases, with 21 being male and 9 female.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the alarming trend, with Nyange stating that they are doing this through a questionnaire to interrogate the men.
Once they establish the cause, the police will rope in relevant agencies to help the affected people.
The county has also seen an increase in gender-based violence cases and defilement cases, with close relatives being the perpetrators in many instances.
"As a community, we are alarmed by high cases of defilement involving relatives whom such children look upon to protect them from sex pests, this must be reversed," Nyange stated.
