Kenya Records 26 New COVID-19 Deaths, Total Fatalities Rise to 4,404

On August 19, 2021, the Ministry of Health reported 26 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities to 4,404.

These cases were reported in August, with 26 additional deaths being filed on Thursday, raising the total number of deaths in the month to over 50.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe also announced that 1,263 more people tested positive for the virus out of a sample size of 8,680, representing a positivity rate of 14.6 per cent.

Of the new cases, the majority were reported in Nairobi (272), followed by Kiambu (122), Makueni (80), Nyeri (76), Kitui (66), Nakuru (66), Machakos (53), Nyandarua (45), Embu (40), and Mombasa (36).

According to Kagwe, 112 patients were discharged from healthcare facilities, leaving 1,982 patients still admitted. Of these, 146 were under the Intensive Care Unit and 782 were on supplementary oxygen.

Seventy-nine patients in the ICU were on ventilatory support, and 67 were on supplemental oxygen. No patient was under observation.

Additionally, 9,845 people are still under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program.

As of the report, 2,221,704 people have been inoculated, with 2.8 per cent of adults fully vaccinated. The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 52.8 per cent, with the majority being males at 55 per cent and females at 45 per cent.
