On August 19, 2021, a joint operation by the authorities in Nandi County led to the confiscation of dozens of illicit brews and over 191,000 banned plastic bags at two municipal stalls in Kapsabet town.
According to Assistant County Commissioner Margaret Thuo, the vendors were selling illicit brews made from mixing water and ethanol, packaged in bottles with various labels, including Kingdom vodka and Ken extra.
Thuo confirmed that the authorities also seized over 27,220 pieces of super-match cigarettes, which were untaxed and meant for export purposes.
The confiscated items were taken to the police station, where the two vendors were arrested and charged with various offenses, including selling Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) uncertified products.
Thuo warned that the administration would not rest until all illegal businesses, especially illicit brews, were eradicated in Nandi County.
She called upon the police to continue hunting down those conducting illegal business in the area and the county at large.
As part of the operation, samples of the alcohol were taken to a government chemist for testing.
