On August 18, 2021, Uganda accepted 2,000 refugees from Afghanistan, following a request from the United States government.

Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Betty Amongi sarcastically commented on the situation, suggesting that Ugandan men are more interested in the female refugees than the men.

Amongi tweeted, "I've seen our Ugandan men praying for safe landing of Afghanistan refugees, and sharing numerous photos of ladies. They are vowing total support and cooperation with the government this time on this project. Hope it's not Stingy Men Association."

The refugees will be hosted temporarily at the request of the United States government, according to State Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Esther Anyakun.

Uganda Civil Aviation Authority public relations manager Vianney Luggya stated that the airport is always prepared to accept any number of passengers.
