July 3, 2019 - Safaricom's board has come under fire from Kenyan politician Martha Karua over the appointment of Michael Joseph as interim CEO.
Joseph, a 67-year-old veteran of the telecommunications industry, was chosen to fill the position following the death of Bob Collymore, who passed away on Monday after a long battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
According to a statement from Safaricom, the board resolved to appoint Joseph as interim CEO at a special meeting on Tuesday.
However, Karua took to Twitter to express her disappointment with the decision, suggesting that it was a vote of no confidence in senior Safaricom officials.
“Not good at all, this looks like a vote of no confidence on all the senior guys @SafaricomPLC and talks volumes of a deficit in succession planning!” Karua tweeted.
Joseph, who previously served as Safaricom CEO from July 2000 to November 2010, is currently the Chairman of Kenya Airways Board.
