Nairobi Hosts Thrilling World U20 Athletics Championships

The World Athletics Under-20 Championships kicked off in Nairobi on August 18, 2021, with a thrilling opening day at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.

South African pole vaulter Mire Reinstorf made history for her country, winning gold in the event with a new African U20 Record of 4.15m on her first attempt.

Reinstorf finished ahead of France's Elisse Russis, who cleared 4.15m on her second attempt, and Canadian Heather Abadie, who took bronze with a high of 4.05m.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's 4x400m mixed relays team clinched its first Under-20 Gold medal since 2008, clocking 3:19.70 to take the top spot ahead of Poland and surprise medalists India in the first-ever mixed relay event at the Under-20 Championship.

The Nigerian team celebrated their victory with huge celebrations, marking a historic moment for the West African contingent.
