On July 23, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced changes to the military, promoting key members of the defence forces and shuffling the leadership in new postings and appointments.
Among the changes, a number of female officers were promoted from the ranks of Lieutenant Colonels to Brigadier, including Major General Fatuma Ahmed, who was posted to the Kenya Military Academy and appointed commandant.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Amb. Dr. Monica Juma hosted the newly promoted senior lady officers at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi, under her mentorship program 'Athena; Women in Security Mentorship Program'.
The CS took the moment to congratulate the officers on their promotions, urging them to deliver on their added responsibilities.
‘These promotions were carefully considered, they were merit-based and are to drive vision, They were not a guarantee or a right, but a responsibility that comes with huge expectations. This is a clear indication of the trust and confidence of the Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, President Uhuru Kenyatta who is delegating additional duties to you,’ the CS said.
