On July 3, 2019, a petition was filed in the National Assembly seeking to replace the word 'Harambee' on the Coat of Arms with 'Kenya'.
The petitioner, Mr. Charles Mangua from Limuru, Kiambu, claimed that his move was inspired by a revelation from God.
According to Mr. Mangua, God instructed him to replace 'Harambee' with 'Kenya' on the Coat of Arms, citing the preamble of the Constitution which acknowledges the Sovereign God over the people of Kenya.
House Speaker Justin Muturi directed the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, chaired by Baringo North MP William Cheptumo, to consider the petition and report to the House within 60 days.
Mr. Mangua's proposal drew from the preamble of the Constitution, which states that the Sovereign God over the people of Kenya is the creator of the Universe.
He argued that God commanded the Coat of Arms to read 'Kenya', and that he should not be held responsible for the lives of Kenyans if the word 'Harambee' remains on the Coat of Arms.
