Kenya has made significant progress in its vaccination drive, with over 1.7 million people vaccinated as of August 5, 2021. The country aims to vaccinate 10 million people before the end of the year.
On Tuesday night, the last consignment of 407,000 AstraZeneca vaccines from the UK arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The Acting Director-General of Health, Dr. Patrick Amoth, received the consignment.
Dr. Amoth expressed gratitude to the UK government, WHO, Unicef, and other partners for their support in the vaccine deployment plan. He stated that the latest consignment brings the total number of AstraZeneca vaccines received to 817,000.
The country is expecting to receive additional vaccines, including 1.7 million doses of Moderna, 393,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine, and 1.8 million doses of Pfizer vaccine in the coming weeks and months.
UK Deputy High Commissioner to Kenya, Julius Court, described the donation as a testament to the strong relations between Kenya and the UK. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation to protect individuals and families from the virus.
Unicef Kenya's Chief of Health, Dr. Yaron Wolman, highlighted the significance of vaccine equity in ensuring that everyone at risk from Covid-19 gets vaccinated, regardless of their location.
