On August 18, 2021, singer Willy Paul sparked a heated debate in the music industry by declaring that Gengetone, a popular Kenyan music genre, was dead.

Willy Paul's statement was met with strong reactions from Gengetone artists, with Pozee, a prominent figure in the genre, taking to social media to proclaim his sentiments.

Pozeefirst shared a post on his social media account, writing, 'RIP Gengetone finally😆.'

He followed up with another post, asking, 'Why are guys upset after I said R.I.P gengetone? Surely ur supposed to be happy!!'

However, it's clear that a good number of people are not in agreement with Pozee's sentiments. DJ Shiti hilariously reacted, saying, '😂😂😂😂😂😂 Wacha siasa kijana Gengeton iko bado nivile bado wanamedi… ZikiNice watarudi mchezoni …'

Willy Paul continued to reiterate his claims, stating that his music has contributed to 'killing' gengetone. He wrote, 'I just killed gengetone with my deadly skills!! No one could have done it better! Alafu please kama wewe ni singer na unajaribu kurap, please rap wacha umama.. this album is going to discipline alot people trust me…'

Willy Paul's statement is not the first of its kind. Jalang'o had previously stated that the genre is no longer relevant and has become boring. The pioneers of the music genre, Ethic and Sailors group, are yet to respond to Willy Paul's statements.
