Telkom Kenya's CEO, Mugo Kibati, spoke to Capital Business about the company's journey to improve its products for consumer use.

With over 4 million subscribers on its network, Telkom Kenya has been growing steadily, but not as fast as CEO Mugo Kibati likes. To stay ahead of the competition, the company has developed a strategy that focuses on its unique assets, including its terrestrial fibre network and two landing stations in Mombasa.

According to Kibati, the company's terrestrial fibre network is comparable to no one else's, making it a key differentiator in the market. The company is also building a smart hub at one of its landing stations in Mombasa, which will serve as a gateway into the East and Central African region for international communications.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Telkom Kenya has managed to maintain its customer base and even saw an uplift in the utilization of its mobile communications. The company has also been investing in its network to provide efficient and quality services to its customers.

Looking ahead, Telkom Kenya plans to launch several new products and services, including an app that will make it easier to use its mobile money product, T-kash. The company is also expected to launch the Madaraka life product, which will provide customers with a range of benefits and services.

When asked about the possibility of mergers, Kibati stated that anything is possible in the future, but the company's current focus is on growing Telkom Kenya and transforming it into a technology company.
