On August 18, 2021, MCAs Stephen Mcharo and Jackson Mwagharo from Taita Taveta County called for the arrest and prosecution of a police officer who allegedly assaulted a boda boda operator and his passenger in Mbale last week.
According to Mwagharo, the boda boda operator, Calston Mwangi, was injured by the officer attached to the Wanganga Police Station on the Mbale-Wanganga road.
The rider was allegedly attacked while ferrying his passenger, causing the motorcycle to veer off the road and land in a ditch, injuring both the rider and his passenger.
The rider and his passenger recorded statements at the Wundanyi Police Station, and Mwagharo stated that they would not allow senior police officers to cover up the matter.
Taita Sub County Police Commander Onesmus Kombe acknowledged the case and stated that investigations were underway before the officer could be arrested.
Mwagharo emphasized that the work of police officers is to protect lives and property, but they have formed a habit of using excessive force on innocent Kenyans.
As leaders, Mwagharo and Mcharo vowed not to allow police officers to violate civil rights.
