On August 16, 2021, Kisumu County took a significant step in the fight against Covid-19 with the donation of 18 oxygen concentrator machines by Ubuntu CBO, a Non-Governmental Organization based in Ahero, Nyando Sub County.

The machines, which can filter oxygen from the atmosphere and store it in cylinders for patients with respiratory issues, were handed over to Governor Anyang' Nyong'o by Ms Truphosa Orimba-Lutz, the CEO of Ubuntu.

Ms Orimba-Lutz revealed that the NGO had mobilized resources from friends to help save lives in local public hospitals, with a focus on Covid-19 patients. She also promised to donate assorted dental equipment to aid in oral and dental health programs in public health facilities.

"I felt bad when I heard how Covid-19 is killing our people and decided to act. I will return to Germany and source for more life-saving equipment," Ms Orimba reiterated.

Governor Nyong'o expressed gratitude for the oxygen equipment, saying it would help save the lives of patients with breathing difficulties in hospitals. He added that the machines would be distributed to sub-county hospitals where they are much needed.

According to the World Health Organization, oxygen concentrators provide supplementary oxygen for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and can be used for severe chronic hypoxemia and pulmonary edema.
