Kenya's Harambee Stars had been banking on a favourable outcome in the remaining Group E and F matches to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations knock-out stages. However, their slim hopes were dashed on July 2, 2019, after Benin's goalless draw against Cameroon.

Kenya had finished third in Group C with three points collected from their only victory against Tanzania on June 27, 2019. They were facing an anxious wait to find out if they could make it through to the next round as one of the best third-placed finishers.

Benin's draw against Cameroon has seen Kenya drop to fifth among the best third-placed teams, with the west Africa nation qualifying at their expense. Benin will now join DR Congo and Guinea in the last 16 from the pool of best losers.
