On August 14, 2021, a disturbing incident occurred in Awendo Sub County, Migori County, where a man allegedly cut off his wife's hand in a domestic dispute.

Dickson Adende, the suspect, is said to have differed with his wife Mercy Achieng Wambo at their residential house within Mabatini Area, before reaching for a machete and cutting her hand.

According to a police report, the incident was reported by Lucas Oginga, a Nyumba Kumbei elder at Sare Mabatini area within Awendo Township.

Police officers were dispatched to the scene, where they found the amputated hand of the victim inside the house. Neighbours had already rushed Achieng to Migori County Hospital, where she is currently admitted and receiving treatment.

The amputated hand was registered at Rapcom Medical Centre for preservation.

Witnesses claim that Adende and Achieng have a history of fighting and had even separated for some time.

"This is not the first time they have quarrelled, though this is the worst thing that has happened between them," said Caleb Ochieng, a witness.

Efforts to track down Adende are ongoing, with police suspecting that he may have escaped to Nairobi.

Kenya has seen a worrying trend of femicides and suicide cases, with 500 people reported to have taken their lives in the three months leading up to June 2021, surpassing the total number of suicides in 2020.
