KenGen Expands Geothermal Footprint in Africa After South Sudan President's Visit

On Tuesday, South Sudan President H.E. Salva Kiir visited KenGen's geothermal power complex in Olkaria, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion plans in the region.

Kenya's geothermal energy leader, KenGen, is at the forefront of developing inclusive and sustainable green energy in South Sudan, aiming to increase electrification of rural areas and boost clean energy sources.

Speaking at the function, KenGen's Managing Director & CEO, Mrs. Rebecca Miano, emphasized the importance of clean energy in curbing climate change, citing the company's expertise in geothermal energy production.

KenGen has heavily invested in geothermal energy production, with a strategic focus on providing insights to various countries in Africa, including Ethiopia, Comoros, Rwanda, and Djibouti.

“Our diverse expertise in energy production has become a point of reference, providing insights to various countries in Africa,” Mrs. Miano added.

KenGen is ready to share its expertise and experience in geothermal power development with South Sudan, offering a range of services including electricity generation, commercial drilling, and geothermal consulting.

The company is also exploring expansion opportunities beyond Kenya, with plans to extend its services to the oil and mining sectors in the region.

Kenya is Africa's number one geothermal energy producer, with a geothermal installed capacity of 685 MW and an estimated potential of 10,000MW along the Rift Valley.

KenGen's Board Chairman, Mr. Joshua Choge, expressed gratitude for the opportunities from various countries, recognizing the company's expertise in geothermal energy development.

“As an institution, our role in capacity building is recognised internationally,” Mr. Choge said.

The development of Olkaria 1 AU Unit 6 is also underway, with the expected completion of KenGen's 165MW Olkaria five in the coming days.
