On August 3, 2021, Simpluz Tecnologias, a Luanda-based Angolan startup, made a significant leap in the fight against fake news by launching Nuxo, a machine learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) solution.

The startup, known for its efforts in combating fake news, had previously developed the news aggregator Manifexto in 2017. However, with the rise of fake news and the time-consuming nature of fact-checking, Simpluz Tecnologias decided to switch to an automated approach.

Nuxo is a simple tool designed to stop the spread of fake news. It allows anyone in the world to analyze news in nearly any language, making it a valuable resource for individuals and organizations alike.

According to Zedilson de Almeida, general manager of Simpluz Tecnologias, Nuxo was trained on a database of over 10,000 news stories, all of which had been pre-classified as true or false. The algorithm identified a pattern that humans cannot do, allowing it to learn and improve over time.

“The more news being analyzed by Nuxo, the more efficient, accurate and necessary it becomes,” said de Almeida. “We decided to use technology to facilitate the fact-checking process and empower the population in the process.”
