On July 2, 2019, the government announced plans to establish specialized counseling units in all Youth Empowerment Centers across the country to offer guidance and counseling services to young people.
The move aims to curb cases of suicides and murders, which have been on the rise among the youth in the county, according to Dr. Francis Owino, the Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs.
Speaking during the opening of a Youth Empowerment Centre in Mwatate town, Owino said his ministry would partner with stakeholders to source for the counselors needed to staff the new units.
The centres, which are part of the government's efforts to promote talent among the youth, will also promote creation of employment through enhancing online jobs under the Ajira Digital Programme.
Operationalization of the Centers had cost the government 21 million shillings in terms of construction and equipping them, Owino revealed.
In the 2019/2020 fiscal year, the government had set aside 152 million Shillings to revamp and operationalize over 60 empowerment centers.
