Published on July 30, 2021, Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) has successfully concluded the recall of Implanon NXT, a family planning product, following a two-week mop-up exercise that started on July 26, 2021.
According to Edward Njoroge, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of KEMSA, the Authority had initiated the recall process after discovering that the consignment was contaminated during its market surveillance and quality assurance process.
The mop-up exercise involved the collection of all family planning products distributed from the contaminated consignment in four counties: Kwale, Lamu, Nyamira, and Kakamega.
Notably, in Nyamira County, over 9,000 packs were collected from 89 sites, while in Kakamega County, about 1,500 packs were collected from Butere District Hospital.
Similarly, in Lamu County, a total of 1,170 packs were collected from only two facilities, Mpeketoni and Lamu County Hospital.
Lastly, in Kwale County, which was the last to conclude the process, 100 percent collection was done, and shipping is in progress.
Speaking on the matter, Njoroge emphasized KEMSA's commitment to providing quality, accessible, and affordable health products to the public, sourced from both local and international suppliers, in line with the attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
