As the Tokyo Olympics continue, concerns over rising coronavirus cases in Japan have sparked debate. On July 29, 2021, Tokyo Olympics organisers reported 24 infections among Games participants, the highest yet.

At least 193 athletes, media, and Olympic employees and contractors have tested positive for the virus, according to Tokyo 2020 figures. This number does not include cases at airports and in training camps.

On the same day, Japan reported 9,583 cases nationwide, a record high. Tokyo also saw a record number of cases.

International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams downplayed the link between the Games and the rising cases. He stated, 'As far as I’m aware there’s not a single case of an infection spreading to the Tokyo population from the athletes or Olympic movement.'

Adams also highlighted the strict measures in place, including regular testing for Olympic participants and a ban on spectators at almost all events. He added, 'We have the most tested community probably anywhere… in the world, on top of that you have some of the toughest lockdown restrictions in the athlete’s village.'

Organisers also insisted that the Games are not putting additional pressure on Japan’s medical system. Only two people associated with the Games are in hospital, and half of those needing care are being looked after by their own medical teams.
