January 6, 2020, marked a significant day for Gor Mahia FC as they took on Ulinzi Stars in the second leg CAF Champions League match at Nyayo National stadium.
However, the team's performance has been inconsistent throughout the season, and they are currently tied on 40 points with sixth-placed Bandari.
Coach Sammy 'Pamzo' Omollo attributed the team's recent dismal run to the departure of key players, including instrumental midfielder Kenneth Muguna and defender Charles Momanyi.
Omollo stated, 'We have started performing dismally in the league because some of our key players have left the club in search for greener pastures while others are nursing injuries.'
He further emphasized that the absence of experienced players, such as Muguna, has been heavily felt in their matches, including the recent 1-0 loss to Ulinzi Stars.
With Geoffrey Ochieng and Philemon Otieno still sidelined with injuries and exciting defender Frank Odhiambo away on a national team duty, Omollo had limited options at the back.
Despite the challenges, Omollo remains confident that the team can bounce back to winning ways against their perennial rivals AFC Leopards on Sunday.
He expressed, 'We have a better history in derbies and we believe that game will offer us a good chance to bounce back.'
