July 26, 2021, a CBS Television investigation exposed a shocking trend where some American students hire their Kenyan colleagues to sit their exams and assignments.

According to the exposé, the practice, known as 'contract cheating', has seen Kenyan writers earning billions of dollars from academic writing.

Reporter Debra Patta explained how the youth in Kenya are given login details to various student portals, granting them access to amenities like the Campus library, where they can study for the exams before sitting for them on behalf of the American students.

The American students pay between Sh2,000 to Sh5,000 per page, while the experienced writers look for upcoming writers to give them 25 percent, taking home between Ksh500 and Ksh1,200 per page.

One Kenyan writer confessed to having done the exams and other academic work for students in the US, including an undergraduate degree and a master's degree for one student.

He revealed that he makes Sh200k every month and that the students in America show concern that the performance is too excellent.
