On Tuesday, July 27, 2021, a brazen daylight robbery shook the Equity bank in Matuu, Yatta, Machakos County. Five armed robbers stormed the bank, leaving two police officers nursing injuries.
According to a police report, the officers were injured after they tried to avert the robbery. The incident occurred at around 9:10 am, and the police were informed by the bank manager, Michael Muriithi Gachanja.
A contingent of officers led by SCPC Yatta, SCCIO Yatta, and Matuu Police Station OCS rushed to the scene and found the two officers incapacitated. The officers, PC (w) Dorothy Opili and Patrick Omusebe, sustained injuries during the scuffle.
PC Opili suffered injuries on her hip joint, bruises on her left hand, and her AK-47 rifle was stolen. Officer Omusebe sustained bruises on both hands, pain, and injuries to his private parts, with his AK-47 rifle also being robbed.
Five customers who were in the banking hall at the time of the robbery were also targeted. The stolen amounts included Ksh 51,860 from Rosina Syombua, Ksh 3,500 from Rhoda Mbithe Hamisi, Ksh 11,000 from James Mulaka Mutuku, Ksh 200,000 from Lawrence Ngugi, and Ksh 4,500 from Mary Kumama. An unknown amount of money was also stolen from a bank teller.
