On July 27, 2021, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the arrest of Innocent Kalio Makokha, a 23-year-old student from Mt Kenya University, in connection with the murder of Christine Ambani.
Ambani, a student at Kiriri Women's University, had been in a romantic relationship with Makokha, who allegedly lured her to her death under the guise of a date.
According to the DCI, Makokha brutally murdered Ambani by stabbing her in the neck and then took over her phone to send a message to her family members, posing as her and asking them to send him Sh87,000.
Further investigation revealed that Makokha is a repeat offender, accused of murdering his own brother, sister-in-law, and their one-year-old child in 2021.
DCI detectives discovered that Makokha had been previously arrested and released under unclear circumstances, and had a history of violent behavior.
