On a tense Monday evening at ASK Nakuru Showground, Ulinzi Stars secured a crucial 1-0 win over defending champions Gor Mahia in the Kenyan Premier League. The match took place on July 26, 2021.
The decisive goal came in the 19th minute, courtesy of a header by Alex Khasambuli, who was perfectly positioned to meet a cross from left winger Masuta Masuta after a goal rebound.
Gor Mahia was without the services of midfielder maestro Kenneth Muguna, who had recently joined Tanzanian side Azam United on a two-year contract. This was confirmed by Coach Sammy 'Pamzo' Omollo in a post-match interview with Standard Sports.
"Our defeat came as a result of numerous injuries on key players and the departure of midfielder Kenneth Muguna to Tanzania's Azam United has affected us," Coach Omollo explained.
Despite the challenges, Gor Mahia's Coach Omollo remained optimistic, stating, "We'll give our best in the next derby against AFC Leopards and it should be noted, we have never lost easily in a derby."
During the match, Mark Bikokwa had a clear opportunity to score the second goal for Ulinzi in the 41st minute, but Gor Mahia's custodian Mathews Otieno was quick to intervene and save the situation.
Ulinzi Stars' custodian James Saruni also played a crucial role in the match, thwarting several scoring opportunities for Gor Mahia, including a solo move by striker Samuel Onyango in the 39th minute.
